이번 작업은 지난해 약 두 달간 스페인 순례길을 걸었던 경험에서 시작되었습니다. 순례길에서의 하루는 늘 어떤 길이 펼쳐질지 알지 못한 채 시작됩니다. 그날 도착할 마을의 이름을 확인하고, 숫자로 표시된 거리만을 짐작하며 걷기 시작합니다. 비슷한 하루가 반복될수록 머릿속은 조금씩 단순해집니다. 오늘은 얼마나 걸어야 하는지, 언제 쉬어야 하는지, 물은 얼마나 남았는지. 그 외의 생각들은 자연스럽게 사라지고, 그 자리를 길 위의 감각들이 채웁니다.어디까지 올라야 할지 모르는 산길, 누군가 구슬픈 노래를 흘려보내던 숲속의 강가, 지루할 만치 끝없이 이어지는 평원. 특별한 사건보다도 그때의 공기와 눈앞의 풍경, 밟고 있는 흙의 색, 반복적인 몸의 움직임 같은 것들이 기억에 남았습니다.

그 경험은 자연스럽게 제가 바느질하는 방식과 닮아 있었습니다. 걷기와 바느질은 같은 행동의 반복으로 아주 느리게 앞으로 나아가는 일입니다. 여섯 시간 동안 30km를 걷듯, 세 시간 동안 15cm의 면을 채워 나갑니다. 바늘은 천을 계속해서 통과하고, 조각들이 하나 둘 연결됩니다. 점과 점 사이의 거리를 계산하고, 면과 면이 만나는 감각을 상상하는 동안 흩어져 있던 생각들이 조금씩 빠져나가고, 화면은 서서히 하나의 형태를 갖추게 됩니다. 이 느린 반복은 지나쳐 버릴 순간들을 조금이라도 느끼고 알아차리는 방식이며, 말로는 설명하기 어려운 감정과 감각을 정리하는 시간입니다.

This work began from my experience of walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain for about two months last year. Each day on the Camino began without knowing what kind of road would unfold ahead. I checked the name of the village I would arrive at that day and started walking, only imagining the distance shown in numbers. As similar days repeated, my thoughts gradually became simpler. How far I needed to walk, when to take a break, and how much water I had left. Other thoughts naturally faded away, and the sensations of the road began to fill that space. A mountain path where I did not know how high I had to climb, a riverside in the forest where someone played a sorrowful song, and endless plains that seemed almost boring in their repetition. More than any special event, I remember the air, the scenery in front of me, the color of the soil beneath my feet, and the repeated movement of my body.

This experience naturally came to resemble the way I sew. Walking and sewing are both acts of moving forward very slowly through repetition. Just as I walk 30 kilometers over six hours, I fill 15 centimeters of fabric over three hours. The needle continues to pass through the cloth, and the pieces are gradually connected one by one. While calculating the distance between points and imagining how different surfaces meet, scattered thoughts slowly disappear, and the work gradually takes shape. This slow repetition is a way of noticing and experiencing moments that might otherwise pass by unnoticed. It is also a time for organizing emotions and sensations that are difficult to express through words.
